April and Sharon ❤️ #Repost @apriltamsmith with @get_repost ・・・ Through Defy Ventures, I got to meet this Incredible woman next to me named Sharon, who has been my mentee for the last 4 years. As I got to spend the day volunteering at Wallkill Prison last week, I couldn’t help but reflect on her life and wonder once again what it was like for her to have spent over 2 decades in a shoe box, and not being able to watch her children grow up or be with her mom when she passed. What has been done is done and what gives me hope is the fact that organizations like defy exists. In our country, current recidivism rate is 70% (!), yet, at defy- the rate drops to 7%, Yes 7!!!! When we were standing In the auditorium, there were about 250 men outside working in “the yard”.. and this shocked me, FIFTY of them had already finished their sentence but have had to stay behind without a home to go to or work. I can’t help but think— Is there a better way? If you can give, give. If you can employ those system affected, pls lift a hand up. If you can mentor, pls do so.
